Since most of Kiwis prefer their private cars and the situation is pretty much the same in Auckland, there are numerous car rentals all over the city, but the main problem in central Auckland is where to get a parking space. One of the best places is off Beach Road, at the eastern end of Customs Street at the price of $8 for twelve hours. Other street parking meters charge approximately $1 per hour during the rush hours, but after 6pm and till 8am it is free, as well as on Sundays.
There is a possibility to discover the city by bicycle and every visitors center in Auckland offers Bike Guides for the entire region. The best bicycle tracks are around Devonport and cycling up to Mission Bay. Adventure Cycles, located at 36 Customs Street, offers bikes on hire and purchase with a possibility of a buy-back scheme. A bike rental costs from $18 to $35 per day.
Local ferries operate from Auckland to Devonport, Stanley Bay, Birkenhead and Bayswater, all situated in the North Shore, but they also drive to the gulf islands (Great Barrier Islands, Waiheke and Rangitoto) and Half Moon Bay near Howick. Fullers is the name of the company that provides this service from two piers, one located off Jellicoe and Brigham Street in Freemans Bay, and the other one situated at the city center, near Britomart, off the Quay Street. For actual prices on various boat tours, there are further informations on Fullers.
There are many taxi services in Auckland including the biggest company - Auckland Co-Op Taxis, reachable at 09- 300 3000. Other companies are listed in the city’s yellow pages with flagfall at $2, followed by an amount from $1.75 to $2.10 per kilometer. No matter which taxi service is used, there is an additional $4 toll for transport to and from the airport and cruise ships.
Stagecoach is the city’s main bus operating company with most of the buses departing from bus stops situated around Britomart, since there is no central bus station. Bus stops have detailed time-tables of particular lines across the city and the prices, payable by the driver, vary from 30c (children) to 50c (adults) in the inner city center, while those a bit further may cost up to $9. Still, there are dayly passes at $10 which valid from the city center to the North Shore ferries, but there are no reduction for children. There are tourist buses that drive through the city center such as the Circuit City Bus that provides a free of charge service from Britomart to Auckland University and across Sky Tower back to Britomart. Though at the price of $1,50, the Link Bus leaves every 10-15 minutes and also makes a loop around the most attractive buildings in the inner center. The Nightrider is a special bus service that runs from 1am to 3am of Friday and Saturday nights and it starts on Queen Street, in front of the Civic Theatre.
Since there are only three routes from Britomart station: to the Waitakere Ranges and to Pukehoke, the trains leave every hour each day, except on Sunday, from 6am to 8pm. There is a possibility to buy a Discovery Ticket at the price of $13 which allows a one days travel that covers most of the buses, trains and ferry services in the area.
