Baden-Württemberg's capital is Stuttgart. Baden-Württemberg is one of the 16 states of the Federal Republic of Germany. It features the famous Black Forest and the celebrated romantic city of Heidelberg. It is located in southern Germany and it is part of the southern German speaking world where dialect and tradition remain strong. It is a more rural and bucolic area than central and northern Germany. The state was created in 1951 out of the historical states of Baden, Hohenzollern and Württemberg, part of the region of Swabia. After World War II, Allied forces established three states: Württemberg-Hohenzollern, South Baden (both occupied by France), and Württemberg-Baden (US-occupied), which in 1949 became parts of the Federal Republic of Germany. On 9 December 1951 these states merged on 25 April 1952 into Baden-Württemberg.
