Motovun film festival

The Istrian town called Motovun became the host of the International Film Festival in 1999. Throughout the years the town has become the symbol for one of the most significant cultural manifestations on the whole territory of Croatia. During 5 days and nights - this is the time of duration of the festival - the town accommodates more than 20 000 spectators. The festival is based on the movies which have been made within small cinematography and independent productions. The aim of the festival is the revival of former Croatian movie connections, without any glamour and affectations. At the same time this festival is serious movie manifestations, intended for all movie fans. The projections are shown on several displays in the open. The propeller of the festival is the main award for the best movie of the festival and the award is given by the international jury. There are also awards given to the movies from the region “From Albania to Austria” - the bigger distribution is stimulated by great monetary contributions. “Motovun online” is the oldest award of this festival and it’s assigned by the jury of young Croatian professional actors. This award is dedicated to the best movie in duration of fifteen minutes. The award of the public is the award given by the spectators which vote via SMS messages. The award “FIPRESCI” is the award assigned by the association of international film critics. The “AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL HUMAN RIGHTS” award is presented to the best movie which depicts the theme of protection of human rights. This festival is held annually and each year you have a chance to see approximately 100 films.

Pula film festival

Pula film festival has the longest tradition in Croatia; it is the oldest film festival on this territory. It was held in 1953 for the first time. This festival is also held annually and each year up to 5 000 spectators are gathered here. Since the very beginning it has been taking places within the Amphitheatre of Pula. The festival has competitive character and it also includes movies made in domestic production. The main award of the festival is the Golden Arena which is presented to the best movie, scenario, production, scenery, actor, actress… The award “Oktavijan” is presented by the Association of young Croatian movie critics, while the spectators vote for the winner of the Golden Arena. Many Croatian movies shown here have also won awards on foreign festivals, such as Marshall, Fine Dead Girls, Witnesses, The way of Water - melons, Wonderful Night of Split...

ZagrebDox

ZagrebDox is the international festival of documentaries and it was established in 2005. Approximately hundred creative documentaries are shown every year within the program of the festival. Thirty countries from all over the world participate in this cultural manifestation. ZagrebDox shows movies made in regional production and the countries which participate within this contest are, amongst others, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Macedonia, Albania, Montenegro, Bulgary, Romania. The official wards of the ZagrebDox Festival are:

 

  • The Grand Stamp - for the best film out of international competitive program;
  • The Grand Stamp - for the best film out of regional competitive program;
  • The Little Stamp - for the best movie directed by young producer (up to 30 years of age); and
  • T-Com award which is presented for the best movie by the audience.

The awards are in the form of statues and diplomas.

Zagreb Film Festival

This festival was initiated in 2003. It presents debut titles of the new authors - this is the place where you can see future hits in the time when almost no - one hasn’t heard about them. The festival lasts seven days, and the films are projected in Europa cinema and within the Students’ Centre in Zagreb. Almost 30 000 spectators visit this festival almost every year. The main award of the festival is the so-called Golden trolley and the winners are awarded in money.

Animafest

The festival was established in 1972 - it’s the festival of animated film and the capital of Croatia was chosen as the host of the festival. In 2005 the new category was introduced within the festival program - the category of feature - length animated film. This is the reason why the festival is held annually - even years are dedicated to short movies, and odd years to these longer movies. What is sure is that Animafest always offers rich and interesting program. The award of the festival is called “Golden Zagreb". There are a few more film festivals which are held in Croatia and some of them are: Vukovar film festival, International Festival of the new movie wave, Libertas film festival, International Dubrovnik film festival...
