The tiny and strangely shaped Republic of Croatia is actually one of Europe's more diverse countries -- especially considering its size. There's something Central Eruopean about northern Croatia, while the south has a recognizably Mediterranean feel to it. In the past ten years Croatia has become a well-established tourist destination attracting visitors from all over the globe. Approximately 10 million foreign guests visit Croatia in summer which makes this country the 18th most favourite destination worldwide, and provides a very important source of income for Croatia's developing economy. The most popular destination in the country is Dubrovnik with its wonderfully preserved medieval Old Town. Yet another Croatian highlight are the islands of which there are more than a thousand. Those you should try not to miss are Mljet, Hvar, the Kornati archipelago and Cres. Zagreb, the country's capital, is best savoured on a short visit in late spring or early autumn.
