Slavonia is a region located in the estern part of Croatia, bordering Hungary, Serbia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina. This fertile agricultural land is divided into five counties with a total population of approximately 1 million. Osijek is the biggest city of the region and economic, cultural and administrative centre of the region. Notable turist destinations include the Kopački rit nature park and the Papuk nature park. Kopački rit is located northwest of the confluence of the Drava and the Danube, at the border with Serbia and it is one of the most important, largest and most attractive preserved intact wetlands in Europe. The monutain of Papuk is the largest in the region with its peak reaching 954 meters. Papuk was declare the first Croatian Geopark and 30th member of the European and UNESCO Global Geopark Network. The region of Slavonia is also famous for its exceptional cuisine influenced by primarily Hungarian dishes which tend to be quite hot but very delicious.
