The place of singing and dancing is situated between San Fernando and Anillo Periferico. It is the oldest known civilization of central Mesoamerica. It dates back as far as 800 BC when it was situated on the shores of lake Xochimilco. During its peak in the 2nd century BC is had almost 40,000 inhabitants and was bigger than Teotihuacan. It is also known for having the earliest hydraulic system. It was founded by villagers who lived from agricultural activities and had a complex system of religious rituals. Tlalpan is the seat of the biggest delegaciones in Mexico City. It is situated 2,294 m above sea level in the Valley of Mexico. It is on the northern slopes of the extinct volcano Ajusco. It enjoys a moister and cooler climate. Today it is a colonial village with an impressive architecture and a bohemian flair.
(Tel: 5606-9758; Insurgentes Sur; admission free; opening hours 9am-5pm) The main structure of the archaeological site Cuicuilco is a big circular platform with four levels with volcanic stones. It was probably a ceremonial center. Today it is surrounded with park of trees and cacti. Although it isn`t an impressive site as many other sites in Mexico City it is one of the most important ones.

(Tel: 5573-2395; Hidalgo 43; admission $4.50; opening hours 9.30-noon % 4-6pm Mon-Thu) The chapel was designed in the 1940a by Luis Barragan. It is a modernist building surrounded by colonial architecture. It belongs to the monastery of Capuchine nuns.
